That orbit a satellite would follow, under the influence of several forces, if all forces other than the gravitational attraction of the primary were suddenly removed (set equal to zero). The body would then follow an elliptical orbit about the primary. This orbit would be tangent to the actual orbit at the point where the perturbing forces were removed. Because most satellites follow orbits which are approximately Keplerian for short intervals of time, the actual orbit is often conveniently expressed in terms of an osculating orbit whose elements (size, shape and orientation) are changing slowly.
