An instrument for measuring the area of a planar figure mechanically, by tracing the perimeter of the figure. Alternatively, an instrument which serves to determine the value of a definite integral mechanically by tracing the line which represents the function to be integrated. The curve need not be smooth but it must be smooth. The planimeter consists, in its simplest form, of a rod and the tracing arm, on one end of which is mounted the stylus which follows the perimeter. The other end of this arm may be constrained to motion along a straight line or it may be made to move in a circular path by being joined by a hinge to one end of another rod, the polar arm, whose other end is fix (to a pivot). The first form is called a linear planimeter; the second form is called a polar planimeter. Other common forms are the rolling planimeter and the suspended planimeter. The one most often used for calculating areas of regions on maps is the polar planimeter.
